Seven or more eggs a week raises risk of death
64
The Harvard team of researchers studied 21,327 men doctors as part of a larger Physicians’ Health Study. They agreed to report regularly on their health and lifestyle habits. The study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Dr. Luc Djousse and Dr. J. Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School found 1,550 of the group had heard attacks, 1,342 had strokes and more than 5,000 died during the 20 year period. The team found that men without diabetes could eat up to six eggs a week with no extra risk to death, but when they seven or more eggs carry a 23 percent greater risk of death. However, the men with diabetes in the group carry a higher risk than others. They found evidence or a great risk of heart attack and stroke even when they eat a few eggs. Eggs are high in cholesterol, so when one eats more eggs, high cholesterol amount can clog arteries and poses risk of heart attack and stroke. Dr. Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado and a former president of the American Heart Association agrees with this study and told Associated Press: "More egg on our faces? It's really hard to say at this point, but it still seems, if you're a middle-aged male physician and enjoy eggs more than once a day, that having some of the egg left on your face may be better than having it go down your gullet…But, remember: eggs are like all other foods -- they are neither 'good' nor 'bad,' and they can be part of an overall heart-healthy diet," The study also found those who ate more eggs were older, fatter and ate more vegetables but ate less breakfast cereal. They are also likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise all affecting heart’s health and eventually lead to death. The researchers urged the study to be extended to the general population.![]() | Amazon Price: $4.98 List Price: $15.95 |

Eggs hey? After reading your article I am very pleased I have only ever felt like eating an egg now and then. BUt I am now very concerned about the amount of English I speak. That can't be true. Can it?
Your fan.
Mon.
Very interesting, I still think we all need to balance out what we eat. Not one thing or the other. Too much of anything cannot be good. I love my lollies. well....
i like eggs and eat about 8 a week and would call myself a young man!..I wonder is it the white or yellow of egg that is the culprit or are they part n parcel of problem, and would it depend on how they are cooked, like boiled, fried, poached ect..! ..Food for thought!
Thanks for clearing this up and link.
It seems like moderation is the key word to many of lifes answers as to the amount of alcohol, cigarettes or even even eggs we consume!
Eggs that kill? Woow, and i love eggs...i must rethink my diet :)
Eggs, schmeggs. Let's eat what we like. Even if we have to converse about it in English.
The yellow is the fat and cholesterol that will become a new chick (woo hoo).
The white is the protein within the eggshell to sustain that new life.
I'm all for both.
Very hard to do, cgull, especially when bacon is involved.
LOVE your hubs.
Ok, I'm guessin I need to buy fewer eggs, but I do love 'em...and I eat probly 7 or more if you count the things you put eggs in....sheeesh what else do I have to give up? Not Chocolate!! maybe I could switch to doughnuts? LOL great info....guess I should cut back...Marisue
Well clearly I'mOK because this study was only done on men and I'm a woman so bring on the eggs:-) You can drive yourself crazy with all this stuff. Bottom line is you could skip the eggs and walk across the street and get killed by a car--It's a crap shoot and one of these days the grim reaper will get you anyway--but 8 eggs a week is a lot--too many I think. Moderation, as cgull says, is the key, but even moderation won't bring immortality<sigh>
I love eggs but I limit my intake to only 1 per day because of stories I've heard that eggs are bad for the health - cholesterol -. Thanks for this hub, I can eat more than 1 egg per day.
There seem to be some serious problems with this study. You have to take every study you read with a grain of salt because they can all be manipulated to make any kind of conclusion. I've also come across studies and nutritional experts who claim that eggs are actually very good for your heart as they raise HDL levels (good cholesterol) and lower LDL levels (bad cholesterol). Interesting study, though.
Thanks for the great information. I didn't know eggs could be so bad!
Nothing to add in this topic from my side as i am totally veggie :)
Ehh.. I've heard so many back and forth news stories about eggs ever since I was a baby. One week they're good, next week they're bad... oh well, I only eat them once or twice a month anyway, so guess I'm in the clear either way!
I disagree. Eggs from organically raised, free range (stress fee & ethically raised) chicken actually have much less of the bad cholesterol..
We eat alot of eggs, because they are free, and my husband's cholesterol stays around the 135 mark...Mine is a little higher at 150. Not bad for a couple in their late forties..
I will see if I can get the time to pull a hub together this evening or tomorrow.
I'm with Marye Audet. Many of the health dangers of egg consumption can be reduced or eliminated by eating eggs from hens raised and fed on pasture. Eggs from pasture raised hens contain 1/3 less cholesterol, 1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids, 7 times more beta carotene, higher levels of folic acid and vitamin B12, and more than typical commercially produced eggs.
The Queen Elisabeth II of Great Britain is very fond of eggs and she eats them very regularly (there is a lot written about this topic in culinary books about British Royal household). She is in perfect health and she is in the top condition intelectually, as well.
I think, if a person cares about proper physical and mental exercises, eggs could represent a very quality food.

Someone just showed me a joke mail stating that Mexicans eat more fat than we do in the UK and have a lower rate of heart disease.
The Italians drink more wine with and have a lower rate of heart disease and so it went on through all the nations that eat more "bad" things than we do, and have a lower rate of heart disease.
The conclusion was that speaking English is the cause of the problem!
