Police use tracking devices for Alzheimer's patients
62
Greenfield Police Chief Clarke Mercer wants to use this technology to locate missing people. He said those who are prone to getting lost can wear this tiny device that transmits radio signals on pre-set frequencies. Police use tracking receivers and tune to that particular frequency of the person they are seeking to find.
Greenfield is the seventh agency in Indiana to use Care Trak technology according to Michael Chlewski, a representative of the company. Police have been using considerable resources in the past to locate missing Alzheimer’s patients; this new technology will help them locate faster. Recently in Greenfield, Indiana two students with autism went missing from the elementary school and had to comb a vast area to locate them. Mercer saw the demonstration of this device and was bowled over by it and said it is a no brainer not to use this technology in the police department. Della Turnbill, a facilitator for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group in Greenfield said this will bring peace of mind to the families. The units cost about $6,500 and are funded in total by means of donations and contributions from various organizations. Joey Johnson, assistant principal of J.B. Stephens Elementary School, who made the suggestion first to Mercer, said this technology helps the community as well as the police to find the missing persons quickly with minimum effort and provides a safe environment for the community. Johnson said the radio equipment has more advantages than GPS technology, which is less effective in wooded area or if the person goes inside the building. Radio technology can be used in those problem areas. Chris and Gretchen Schulz, parent of 10 year old autistic child Sam, welcomes this new technology in Greenfield. Their son has tried to run away from home and school many times. It sounds great and should be used by other communities also, since the costs are not high to implement compared to the existing costs in the community needed to locate missing persons.|

Very true that with GPS tracking we can save lives of people suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. Thanks to big technological gain there are lots of GPS safety products available in the market. I’m using eCare GPS Tracking for my mom, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s since last few years. She used to wander away many time but, there are no incidence that she wander away since we have eCare GPS tracking for her.
