Elke Wisbey, 6, was brain damaged after she was born. She was able to speak for the first time with a new speech communicator and her first words were “I love you” to her mom.
Elke was born to a poor family, but thanks to the generosity of her neighbors, Elke’s family was able to afford the $27,000 MyTobii Smartbox device.
MyTobii tracks the user’s eye movement with the help of tiny lasers. The device carries a small screen with various icons, each representing words or phrases. When the eye focuses on a particular word, the computer speaks out with the right word or phrase. After the family set up the device for Elke, she was able to use MyTobii. Elke looked repeatedly at the “I love you” icon to show her affection for her parents and her nine-year-old brother.Elke has begun to learn other words and phrases with the help of her parents. She is now able to play games and browse the Internet, allowing her to become more independent. The MyTobii Smartbox is also able to do a variety of other functions such as dimming the lights in the room, operating the television set and controlling various electronics.According to the article, Elke’s condition won’t let her live long to adulthood because her condition is vulnerable to illnesses like pneumonia. But until then she will be able to make her parents happy by sharing her feelings with them via MyTobii Smartbox.
