Lessons I Learned From Great Quotes

By cgull8m

When I was growing up, my grandparents used to say quotes all the time to explain life situations, which helped me reinforce some important lessons and I still follow them.

Quotes are something you can use it without having to experience it for years or learn it the hard way.

Quotes are succinct; they can summarize an important situation with just two or more lines.

There are great quotes from William Shakespeare, Benjamin Franklin, Rochefoucauld, Epictetus, Thiruvalluvar, Aristotle and many more.

Either you can find things on your own or read the great quotes from these writers and others. If you read their quotes, life won't look complex to you.

Here are some great quotes I collected over the years.

"I've learned so much about the human mind and the body, and the doctors talk all the time about how you become your thoughts. It's true. With one thought it starts, you know, and if you sit there and just stay hung up on one negative thought, you will become that thought."

- Quincy Jones.

Lesson: Try to live with positive thoughts always

"How poor are they that have not patience!
What wound did ever heal but by degrees?

- Shakespeare in Othello.

Lesson: You can't succeed without patience.

"We've always said the character has got to be in players if they're going to be great players...You can't just draft it. It's not just about talent, it's about character, and he's a person of high character, brings that to play, not only in just his gamesmanship but also his intestinal fortitude."

- Lakers coach Phil Jackson about Derek Fisher.

Lesson: Talent is good, but you need character also, without it, talent means nothing.

"Never rest on your laurels, they rust rapidly."

- Amitabh Bachchan.

Lesson: Don't get too high with victories, be humble instead.

"Don't try to be the 'next'. Instead, try to be the other, the changer, the new."

- Seth Godin in "Next Google" blog.

Lesson: Follow your own unique course, don't mimic others.

Persian: A thousand nations of the Persian empire descend upon you. Our arrows will blot out the sun!
Stelios: Then we will fight in the shade.

- From the movie 300.

Lesson: Don't give up easily.

"Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem."

Lesson: If you want to commit suicide, wait until a year, you will find it is not a problem anymore.

"Revenge is like a poison,
It can take you over.
Before you know it...turns us into something ugly."

- From Spider-Man 3 movie.

Lesson: Anger and revenge only exaggerates the problem.

"If you've got one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow, you're missing today."

- Liza Minnelli, Broadway star, Oscar, Tony, Emmy and Grammy winner, as quoted in Parade Magazine.

Lesson: Enjoy everyday with others before it is gone.

"All my life I had a choice between hate and love. I chose love and I am here."

- A. R. Rahman, Oscar-winning musician from India.

Lesson: Love takes you towards the goal, hate takes you way far away from the goal you are trying to reach.

"A reputation is like fine China, expensive to acquire, and easily broken."

- Peter Kiewit quoted in The Snowball.

Lesson: It takes time to gain reputation, don't blow it in a second.

"Every day that I live with the dogs, they teach me something new about them. For everything that I do to help them, they give me a thousand gifts in return."

- Cesar Milan in Cesar's Way.

Lesson: When you teach others, you gain more wisdom.

There's a way to do it better - find it.

- Thomas A. Edison

Lesson: If we settle for something, then others will pass by quickly with a better product or work.

"Whatever you do next, make sure it's something you love. A life, professional or personal, without passion you're dead."

- From the TV Show "Boston Legal".

Lesson: Without passion, we can't excel in what we do.

"Wealth I would have, but wealth by wrong procure I would not; justice, e'en if slow, is sure."

Plutarch in Plutarch's Lives.

Lesson: Goes well with the American quote "Easy come, easy go."

"You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club."

- Jack Landon.

Lesson: Don't expect success will come and knock your door or others will take you to it, you have to go after it.

There are many more I will add them in the next Hub. If you have some great quotes, share it with us.

"If you want to commit suicide, wait until a year, you will find it is not a problem anymore." heheheh. I don't think it's easy.

"It takes time to gain reputation, don't blow it in a second." Even if you take care of it, other people will always try to destroy it. Sad fact, but it's true.

Nice quotes. :)

Audrey thanks, I know it is controversial. But people are dying for sadly solvable problems. If we look back we must have faced 100s of problems, we don't have to die for it every time.

I agree regarding the reputation, I learnt from Maya Angelou that when somebody praises, don't get hyped up, so when somebody puts you down, you will know how to respond. We just have to be even keeled and ignore critics. Thanks.

Hey cgull8m,

I love these quotes which make more sense than some of the old wives tales which i often hear!

My avorite Quote: "I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end" - Margaret Thatcher-AKA, The Iron Lady - Former UK Prime Minister.

Ref the suicides..I know, or im pretty sure that 99% of all suicides would wished they did not do it if they were up there some where looking down!

Thanks Quicksand.

Compusmart, Thatcher was awesome, that quote sums up her the best, without which she couldn't get things done against male-dominated parliament.

Wow. Terrific quotes, great idea for a Hub. I really like the idea that your grandparents taught you wisdom through quotes; what a terrific way to give kids good character and life skills!

I was perusing the list of hubbers and when I came to you, your avatar caught my eye. What a beautiful photo of a seagull! I recently found a whole bunch of nice photos of seagulls on the web and saved them, thinking I might write a hub about seagulls. Hmmm. I also have just recently been writing some hubs about computer problems, and that also connects to you.

I joined Hub Pages a month ago and have been so busy writing hubs that I haven't had much time to talk to other hubbers until the last few days.

Anyway, great hub, great quotes! I look forward to reading more of your work! I'll check out some of your other hubs right now.

Maraiya, great to know, I hope you have a great experience in Hubpages. Your articles are excellent, I hope others learn from it instead of experiencing it on their own. Cheers.

I like the quotes you have chosen and learned from. My favorite is the one by Liza Minnelli. These inspirational quotes teach us others have been right where we have been and have turned out to be a success. We can too.
