A British student after visiting the orphanage in Tanzania and seeing sub-standard care and service decides to buy and manage the orphanage herself.

Amy Lambert, 24 is a Bath Spa universityundergraduate student in UK. She visited the Tanzanian orphanage as part of her summer volunteering work.

The orphanage takes care of 150 boys and girls, most of whom have either a single parent or lost both parents to AIDS and HIV.

Lambert saw the children living under poor conditions, starving, dehydrated and sleeping in dirty beds.

Miss Lambert told Telegraph:

"These children are the most beautiful, selfless people I have ever met. I have never felt so helpless."

She was horrified with the conditions at the orphanage, so she decided to buy the Kichijo Orphanage in Tanzania. She went back to UK and raised more than £30,000 ($44,088) in just seven months.

Instead of just transferring the money to the orphanage authorities, she told them that she want to buy the orphanage from them.

The Tanzanian officials accepted her offer earlier this year. Lambert, a Wiltshire resident will complete her degree in Psychology and Health Studies in July and will then move to Tanzania to manage the orphanage.

With the collected funds, she plans to dismantle the old building and replace it with a modern one. Lambert hopes to build a room for children for education purposes. She also plans to teach them other arts so they can become self-sufficient in the future.

Lambert has a special website for her Kichijo Orphanage. If you are interested to support her charity, you can donate it at the link here.

Cgull8m, this is an interesting news item. It must have been really rewarding to be able to purchase that orphanage and make it a better place for the children. The children do indeed look beautiful, but I wonder what Amy Lambert means when she calls them "the most selfless people" she has ever met. What does being selfless entail, when applied to a child?

Aya, thanks for your comment. From my perspective, I have found poor people are very happy despite having less with them. They are more social and all they care about you rather than what you have or not. That is what she means "selfless" and most of them share whatever they have and are content. We won't see that in the western world, where materialism counts more. If you like to donate, you can donate books, cloth, and other stuff to them. I plan to send children books there, so they may find it useful.

She had really gone out of her way to help people. It's not an easy task and not many people will do it. You're right, she's an inspiration.

I just got back from Kichijo and this is not the same atmosphere that I saw when volunteering there. The children are not being fed the amount of food that they need . The furniture that is in the pictures is no longer there. Yes, there are that many children living there and Yes, they need help. Mama Lucy is doing all she can for the 100 plus children.

Patrice, thanks for the update, I hope the situation improves soon. A mind is a terrible thing to waste in this case a thousand minds.
